What is an Electroformed Mask and How Is It Made?

Electroforming is an additive electrochemical manufacturing technology. The whole production flow of an electroformed mask starts with a precision mandrel. Photoresist is coated, exposed and developed on the mandrel to form the inverse pattern of the final mask. Under controlled electric current, nickel or nickel alloy ions deposit layer by layer around the photoresist features. After reaching the target thickness, the finished electroformed mask is peeled off from the mandrel, followed by cleaning, surface inspection and frame assembly.
